1987

Launched the Belleville Transit Commission (BTC)’s a first-ever bus route to Loyalist College.

Student Government submitted a proposal to BTC in 1983-84 and then provided student support in 1984-85 to accompany BTC’s proposal to the Minister of Transportation and Communications requesting an expansion of bus services.

Student Government has continued to advocate for enhancements to bus transportation for students:

  • 1997-98: Prepared a petition for Belleville Transit Officials in an effort to reduce the cost of monthly passes and improve the bus service for Loyalist Students.

  • 2003-04: Initiated a new Loyalist Monthly Bus Pass to provide students with savings of $8/month.

  • 2004-05: Arranged for Loyalist Monthly Passes to be available for purchase in the Bookstore and also advocated for convenient Loyalist arrival and departure times.

  • 2007-08: Launched a faster route to Loyalist as well as a Loyalist Semester Bus Pass to offer savings to students.

  • 2014-15: Arranged for daily bus tickets to be available for purchase in the Bookstore based on student feedback.

  • January 2018: Launched a new late evening bus service, running until midnight seven days a week.

  • November 2020: Installed a heater inside the Transit Shelter to keep students warm while waiting for the bus in the winter.

2015

Launched Route 10.

A new direct bus route between Loyalist College, the Quinte Mall and the Walmart plaza.

Student Government has also introduced other transportation initiatives including:

  • 2015-16: Designating 24 parking spots on campus for carpool groups (vehicles with two or more staff and/or students), as over 90% of carpool groups were students. The top 4 carpool users were awarded with gift cards in recognition of their contribution to reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions.

  • 2016-17: Creating a new Transportation section on the website to highlight Belleville Transit, the Carpooling Program, Loyalist Ride Board as well as other transportation options to Loyalist from surrounding communities.

2016

Opened a new environmentally responsible, weather-resistant and fully accessible Transit Shelter on campus.

This initiative began in the fall of 2014 when First Year Leader, Olivia Millard advocated on behalf of students to bring much-needed improvements to the previous shelter. From there, a partnership between Loyalist College and the City of Belleville was developed to replace the existing shelter.

2021

Launched a new bus route.

Connects Quinte West and Belleville with a stop at Loyalist College.
